One of the things I've found it hardest to get adjusted to, as a separated parent, is the extraordinary quiet in the house when the kids are with their dad. It's strange, because it doesn't seem particularly noisy when the children are with me. Well, except for when they fight, when I imagine they can be heard in the next county. But when they're gone, the house is filled with a deadening quiet.
Abstinence Programs a return to ignorance 12/14/2004 Although Kinsey has been credited by some and decried by others as the "Father of the Sexual Revolution," he didn't create the conditions in his report. He merely exposed the reality: that contrary to prevailing beliefs, Americans enjoyed oral sex, masturbation and premarital sex. What's frightening is that more than 50 years later the current administration is working to bring teenagers back to pre-Kinseyian ignorance. A daughter's lesson in living and bravery 11/30/2004 Ever since she was an infant, my daughter Amie has been teaching me lessons about how to better live life. I've always admired her (and not just because I'm her mother), but never more so than recently when she was diagnosed with Type I diabetes.
The election results make me wonder if this country is becoming a place of the kind of religious intolerance the Pilgrims came here to escape from.
Soldiers' views are essential for America 10/19/2004 Operation Truth is helping vets returning from Iraq let the public know what it's really like over there.
War's expenses reduced homeland security funds 10/5/2004 The Bush administration has made homeland security and
the war on terrorism one of its major campaign themes. But have the decisions
made by this administration really made us safer?
Rising incidence of PTSD in troops returning from Iraq are overwhelming a VA system already under strain.
Who served and who didn't is the real issue 9/7/2004 I never cease to be amazed at how low politicians will stoop during an election year. This year's election is a stellar example of low politics.
When Brains suffer a shortage of RAM 8/24/2004 My Palm Pilot died recently and it's been ugly without my "Electronic Brain" which, as the kids were so fond of telling complete strangers, worked much better than my REAL brain.
Everyone has a way to support troops 8/10/2004 Months back, I
found myself standing in front of display of men's underwear trying to figure
out which type to buy for a Man-Who-Is-Not-My-Husband. In fact, a
Man-Whom-I've-Never-Even-Met. My mission was complicated because, a) I had no
idea what size to get, and b) male underwear technology has moved on since I
last went shopping for it. (Can anyone explain "boxer-briefs"?) This was all
part of doing my patriotic duty, believe it or not. There's a real value to happiness from sex 7/27/2004 I've decided to hit the
higher-ups at the Greenwich Time for a pay raise. A big one. A really, really
big one. Something to the effect of $50,000 a year. It's either that or they
have to provide me with a hunky toy boy.
Taking responsibility is a moral issue, too 7/13/2004 Why is it that not a single member of the Bush Administration is man enough to say "mea culpa" when they've made a mistake? Is cover your ass more important than national security? Is secrecy the way to achieve a healthy democracy?
Counter the threats to remaining open space 6/29/2004 In the thirty-years between 1970 and 2000 the population of Greenwich increased by just over 2%, from 59,700 to 61,100, according to U.S. Census data. So it’s surprising to learn that in a similar time period (25 years from 1977 to 2001) 67% of the town’s open space has been lost to residential development.
When facts of life are still a novelty to child 6/15/2004 My son has started learning about puberty at school, and this has made for some very interesting dinner conversations. I am SO not ready for this!
Real outrage is due for conduct of war 6/1/2004 After my last column, a few people asked where was my outrage over the murder of Nick Berg. I make clear that what happened to Nick Berg was a heinous crime. But now it's my turn to ask readers a few "Where's your outrage?" questions of my own.
Prison abuse reflects administration views 5/18/2004 The abuse of prisoners at Abu Ghraib isn't just as a result of "seven bad apples" as the President would like us to believe. The responsibility for these abuses lies squarely on the desks of Mssrs. Cheney and Bush.
Police handicapped by current facilities 4/20/2004 Call me "Dirty Sarah". My experiences attending the Citizen's Police Academy put on by our local Police Dept. Turns out this Million Mom March girl is a little trigger happy. Next thing you know I'll be joining the NRA.
'Passion' has potential for both good and evil 4/6/2004 I still remember being told by an eight year-old classmate that I killed Jesus. Perhaps this explains my anxiety about Mel Gibson's 'The Passion of the Christ'.
Election result was a win for the Spanish 3/23/2004 The result of the Spanish election held after the terrorist bombings in Madrid on March 11th says more about an electorate sick of being lied to than it does about capitulating to terrorists.
Spirits get boost from girlfriends' gathering 3/9/2004 A trip to Newport with my girlfriends provides the best (and cheapest) therapy there is: laughter and lots of it.
GOP mum as actions threaten our security 2/24/2004 Republicans were quick to bay for impeachment when the greatest threat to our nation's security was international ridicule for debating the "distinguishing marks" on the Presidential Member. Yet now the White House has really jeopardized our security by (amongst other things) "outing" covert CIA operative Valerie Plame, they are strangely silent.
Personality tests can make one quizzical 2/10/2004 It's a long time till November, so I've decided to give my readers (and myself) a break from relentless examinations of the Executive Branch, the Democratic primaries, and Janet Jackson's mammary. This column is devoted to one of my favorite past times - taking stupid quizzes on the Internet when I'm supposed to be working.
The illusions behind the State of the Union 1/27/2004 Debunking the "spin" used by the President during the State of the Union address. How did he manage to keep a straight face?
Why I find it strange to be labeled a "loony lefty" when I've been registered as a Republican for most of my life.
